El Paredon is a magical surf town that is mostly untouched by tourism. There are two popular hostels on a beach that is otherwise rural and surrounded by modest local homes. What makes this place so hypnotizing is that it is situated on the Pacific Coast in such a way that both sunrise and sunset can be watched from the same beach. It is a hot black sand beach due to volcanic ash which means that the water is always warm. Many turtles lay eggs on the beach and from July to late December it is possible to release baby turtles.
Driftwood Surfer is the most popular Hostel in El Paredon. All throughout Central America their logo can be found on tank tops and stickers. This hostel has a beautiful pool, hammocks for chilling, a slack line and delicious family style dinners. Surf lessons here are very inexpensive (cheaper than I found in El Salvador and Nicaragua). The waves are great for beginners as there is a lot of white wash to catch.
Most people live in the bubble of their hostel as the town is quite undeveloped. However, there are a few local bars and inexpensive food can be found in the neighborhood. It is easy to get stuck in El Paredon. The athleticism of surfing combined with the beauty of the sunsets makes this place a true paradise on earth. I can only imagine that more businesses will open up here in the next few years, but right now it is a secluded and uncommercialized piece of heaven on earth.
