Georgian Cuisine

Georgia is also known for its delicious cuisine. I showed up excited to try the cheese dumplings or khinkali, as they refer to it in Georgia. You can find khinkali stuffed with meat but also mushroom, potato or cheese. There is an etiquette that one is supposed to follow for eating these delicious morsels. You hold the handle of the dumpling and take a bite. In the first bite you are supposed to suck out all of the juice without wasting any. You then eat the rest of the khinkali, leaving the handle on the plate. While in Tbilisi I found vegetarian khinkali at Veliaminov Restaurant.

One of my favorite foods in Georgia was lobio. This is a circular bit of bread with spiced bean paste inside of it. It was simple but satisfying. This is easily found at bakeries that line the sidewalks.

Khachapuri is cheese bread. It is served as a square pastry or in an oval shape with an egg on top. The pastry you can find at bakeries and the pizza-egg khachapuri will need to be ordered at a restaurant.

Along the streets you will see locals selling dried grape juice containing nuts called churchkhela. The texture was in my opinion not enjoyable but I had read that it is the “Georgian Snickers” and therefore wanted to try it.

As I’ve already mentioned the wine was very tasty. Most places I went to would only sell the cheaper local wine by the pitcher. I was traveling alone so I ended up ordering a pitcher to myself. I got comfortably tipsy and definitely enjoyed the experience.
