Hvar

Hvar is an island with crystal clear water and an active party scene. The hostel I was volunteering for in Split also has another location on Hvar. I was sent to help out in Hvar for one week and was able to experience the magic of this island.

There is an archipelago of smaller islands scattered around Hvar. One of my most memorable days in Hvar was when some friends and I rented a motor boat for the day and we explored the surrounding islands. Divided four ways, we each only paid $15. We were given a quick tutorial on how to start the motor and steer; after that we were set loose.

The first stop on our island hopping was a nudist island with a Rasta vibe. The next one was a nightclub with cabana chairs and projectors by the dance floor. The third island had bean bags by the beach and was very laid back. Our last stop was an island with a sandy beach where we found a bar playing House music. We also made one unplanned stop at a small island that wasn’t on our map. We had wanted to be adventurous and explore something new. After tying the boat to some rocks we started to ascend the island mountain. We hadn’t gone far when birds started dive-bombing us. We tried to hold our ground but soon realized that the birds were not going to let us be until we left. They probably had a nest that they were protecting. Laughing once we got back on the boat, we named it Hell Island. All of the bars on the islands could get expensive but there is nothing stopping you from bringing a two-liter beer bottle from the grocery store, parking the boat on the water and throwing your own party. No matter what you do, you’re going to have a good time if you rent a boat in Hvar.

Hvar Out, the hostel where I was helping out, is a place I would definitely recommend. The staff consists of friendly volunteers who encourage the guests to party. There is a rooftop balcony with an amazing view. They also have a kitchen, allowing guests to save a few bucks and make their own meals!

When hanging out on the main island, Hula Hula Bar is a fun place to catch the sunset. A five minutes walk past the bar brings you to the blue lagoon, which like the name implies is absolutely stunning. In the main town there are a number of bars and a nightly pub crawl. During peak season the pub crawl ferries participants to the nightclub on one of the smaller islands.

Besides drinking on the beach, Hvar is also a great option for hiking! Starting from Mustačo Bar, there are trail markers that go along the coast. This trail goes to Milna; there isn’t much to do in that town except enjoy a beer at a cozy beachfront restaurant. However, the walk is incredibly beautiful, since the water is very clear and there are few tourists. Bike rentals are also cheap and a great way to explore Hvar. If you’re looking for a good time, you most definitely should go to Hvar!
