I spent a month in Malawi during the 2017/2018 holiday season. While in Malawi I started to flow with Africa instead of abrasively rubbing against it. I felt confident enough to hitchhike and made friends with an incredible family because of it. I had a positive volunteering experience and stopped being defensive when people tried to trick me into spending outrageous prices. I got the hang of negotiating and earned the respect of locals. When people ask me which countries I’ve visited are my favorite, I always add Malawi to the list. I had no expectations and it shocked me by being so magical.
