Tanzania

Tanzania is the most touristic spot in East Africa. This country has Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, Kilimanjaro, as well as Zanzibar island. You could easily spend thousands of dollars on all inclusive trips. They pick you up at the airport and take you to five star hotels before your safari, hike or beach vacation. As a budget traveler, I only indulged in Zanzibar but still managed to have a lovely time on mainland Tanzania.

The country can be full of enriching local experiences without forking over thousands. Of course, you should do a safari in Africa but as I mentioned in my Kenya post, you can go to Maasai Mara for half the price and see the same animals. I actually indulged in a safari while in Zambia, but more about that later. I do not have alternative suggestions for Mount Kilimanjaro. If you want to climb the tallest peak of Africa you are going to have to fork over one to two thousand dollars. I hear it is worth it if you have that kind of cash. You can hike Mount Kenya (the second highest peak of Africa) for $700 or hike to the top of Livingstonia in Malawi for free!
